Zdzislaw BEKSINSKI was born on 29 February 1929 in Sanok (Poland).
An architect by profession, a photographer and artist.
Around 1960 he gives up the avant-garde.
Since then he has been creating the figural paintings on the fibreboard, of a characteristic fantastic tendency and expressive atmosphere - both tragic and overwhelming. Since around 1990 his works have tended to reveal some features of the art more ascetic and austere in form, often monochromatic and almost devoid of figural motifs. His current works cannot be positively assigned to any known category. He simultaneously works a lot on trick photography and drawings diligently processed on the computer.
From 1983 to 1996 ha was co-operating with Piotr Dmochowski - a collector exhibiting works of Beksinski in his gallery at the Quincampoix street in Paris for years.
He is a controversial artist, valued by critics for the sake of his earlier avant-garde works (photographs, drawings, sculptures and reliefs) and appreciated by the public for his fantastic paintings, as well as for his current trick photographs and drawings created with the use of a computer.
Currently, he lives and works in Warsaw (Poland).
The biggest collection of his drawings and paintings is owned by Piotr Dmochowski. The second biggest one is kept in the museum of the artist's hometown - Sanok. Most of his avant-garde works can be encountered in the National Museum in Wroclaw (Poland).
