The "flat picture" in painting has become standard practice for a good century and the trompe-l'oil of the 19thcentury kitsch painters is somewhat more obscure, becoming obsolete since the Impressionists. Of course, there are the museums. Artists such as Cabanel, Gerôme, Bouguereau... as well as the Orientalists, were rediscovered thanks to the Orsay Museum, for instance. But painting a three-dimensional arm or searching for volume in shading, as Velázquez or Vermeer once did or as it had been taught for centuries is no longer the only criterion. Miro, Matisse, Léger Cezanne... have since foreshadowed the reign of the poster and of the frontal picture, leading the way to what Sergeï Chepik later defined as \"unleashed creativity\" or \"subjectivity as universal criterion\". I like to refer to ancient masters or... photorealism american painters, and if the simple subjects I paint wear no jabots or lace or feathered hat, that is simply because they are more rare nowadays than cowboy boots or rap singer's hats.
