Each time he paints, Malaysian-Chinese artist, Foo Yong Kong dips his brush into his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures. Stunning and beautiful, abstract impressionist works that celebrate his affinity and fondness for nature. For him, the beauty of natural scenery is a constant inspiration.
Growing up in the coastal region of the Malaysian tropics, Foo Yong Kong developed an early but lasting impression of wetlands, rivers, wind, rain and sunshine. "Up close, nature reveals a plethora of wondrous details. The way the sunlight peeks through the microcosm of nature and the myriad shadows created, fascinates me. What I see, finally flourishes on the rice paper."
Some 30 years later, his abstract "mindscapes" have evolved from the representational to the spontaneous. A freer flow of romantist-style. Dynamic glow of layer after layer of colour and the arbitrary shaping of forms. Unadulterated emotion and inner energy bursting forth. East and West dance in harmony to mother nature. Foo Yong Kong is in his element.
Foo has chosen the environment where he grew up around, to springboard his concern for the preservation of the environment. In attempting to voice his mind, he has found an universal theme that is at once, both relevant and timely. In searching for a signature style of his own, he has orchestrated the philosophies of the East and West into a harmonious, distinctive symphony.
His expression of abstract impressionism relies on an internal organisation to give them vitality. With every brush stroke of his calligraphic style, Foo Yong Kong forces us to look at nature in a comtemplative way. The splash of vibrant colours, swirling movements and daring strokes compete and compliment each other, freezing elements of nature of form to carefully composed work.
His paintings, like breaths of fresh air, needed no depiction of objects. Instead, his abstract expressions refresh with an intricacy borne out of his profound oneness with nature. A profoundity that seems to come from nature and life itself. One whose head, heart and hand is in perfect synch to the rhythms of nature, creating abstract "mindscapes" to evoke the senses and to challenge the mind to fathom its inspiration. Herein lies the beauty of his art.
