I'm a Chinese artist born in 1935 in Yixing, Jiangsu province. I studied early by myself and later became a member of Chinese Artists Association. From youth, I was indulged myself deeply in paintings, especially in Chinese painting.Later,my Chinese Painting-- "Surrounded by winds, snows and clouds" was selected for exhibit in The National Art Exhibition in 1977. Since then, more than 200 of my masterpieces have been on display in both domestic and overseas exhibitions, many receiving reviews and comment from leading newspapers. Collections of my Chinese Paintings have been acquired and retained by the Chinese Art Museum, Chinese Military Museum, Jiangsu Art Museum, Guangdong Art Museum and Shanghai Liu Haisu Art Museum. In 1994, my large Chinese painting-- Picture of the Glorious Morning, was displayed and subsequently published by Beijing Tian'an Men Tower. And in 1989, People Art Press published my Chinese Painting Selection. As born in the Jiangnan area, I have developed great interest in the classical local-styled dwelling houses. I used to depict them in Chinese paintings, but has since found it more enchanting and appealing to display the ancient houses by paper-cuts, a new but traditional folk art of China. For several years my entire family went on an expedition to some of the oldest towns in southern Jiangsu and northern Zhejiang, Suzhou, Yixing, Huzhou and Shaoxing,to explore the remaining old houses. Meanwhile,I studied thoroughly the artistic expression of ancient Chinese architecture as found in old pottery, bronze wares, frescoes and scrolls. To me,all the important component parts of traditional architecture: arches, wood-patterned windows and doors, rails, corridors, upturned eaves, brick sculpture, wood carving and rock arrangements are related with "hollow-out," which is the essence of paper-cutting.After several years work,I and my family members finally completed the Jiangnan Old Residences Series, which include over 100 paper-cuts divided into themes such as: gates, doors, corridors, individual rooms. I felt the great pleasure of dream fulfillment.Besides these, I continued to create more paper-cuts of differnt themes, like Fobidden City,Chinese ancient maids, various animals and so forth.Though diligent studies,I developed the traditional cutting skills and absorbed the merits of print and Chinese painting into it. Delicate and smooth cutting skills enable the artwork with lively rhythm, strong sense of third-dimension and beauty for decoration. Then in 1998, Guangdong Art Museum published my paper-cuts--Silhouettes of Jiangnan, which was filmed and played by CCTV, JSTV and other TV stations. In 2000, my Chinese painting collections were published by Hongkong People Art Press, with Silhouettes of Jiangnan Calendar published by Qingyunge Art Co. Ltd. The calendars--- Depiction of Yanling and Be Flushed With Success were also published in succession by Qingyunge Art Co., Ltd. in 2001 and 2002. Also, Reminiscences of Jiangnan, the Zhou family paper-cutting collection, has been published by the Beijing International Art Foundation. My biography was also collected and published by more than 10 reference works, such as the Chinese Art Yearbook. Many friends think I'm stupid to work with the little knife with my achievement in landscape painting, but I think one's true passions are much stronger than the desire for money and fame.
