Philippe Benichou is an American abstract expressionist artist. Born in French occupied Algeria in 1957, his family moved to Nantes, France right after the war. Philippe moved to the United States pemanently in 1978. He studied privately with artist, sculptor and art educator, Francis Coelho in Mill Valley, CA from 1999 until his death in July 2002. The continuing study of art as it relates to spiritual growth is part of his on-going development as an artist. Philippe lives in Topanga, CA with his wife Andreea.
"I was led to becoming an artist through a spiritual quest that began when I was a child. I paint from inner visions and intense emotions. My paintings are proofs and accounts of my travels and metaphysical reflections." I like mixing media to produce unusual textures, shapes, compositions and color coordinations. I am interested in surprising dynamics, rhythms and relationships. Living in a political, delicate and sensitive world, I participate in the process of completely consuming the atmospheres around me in order to process them artistically. All art is spiritual in nature. It is the action of the spirit in physical form. Art is meant to connect us to the now; the only reality worth experiencing. It is the artist's ultimate deed to make harmony out of chaos, joy out of pain, present out of past, truth out of lies. If I succeed in the slightest in making you feel in this moment, I have done my job well. We too often remember to suffer and die but rarely to experience
and live. Art has no past. That is its definition. Great works of art don't "endure" time, they were never connected to it. Art is now or never. Art is to be experienced not explained.\" Philippe Benichou
